All About Tension
Objects that we use everyday are some examples of tension, and we dont even realize it. For instance, when you have a guitar and it is out of tune, it means that the strings are loose, to tune it you would have to tighten the string. The tension of the string will determind its vibration, which will affect the sound it makes. Another everyday example of tension are suspension bridges and cable stayed bridges. In suspension bridges the supporting cables running between the two anchorages are the recievers of tension. The cables are stretched from the weight of the bridge and its traffic as they run from anchorage to anchorage (shown in figure 1). Playing tug-of-war is also an example of tension. Both the teams pull the rope with equal amount of force on both ends of it, which causes the rope to go under tensile stress. Some other examples of tension include springs, ropes, wires, strings, and cables.
